What is disc herniation? For most of those who suffer from it, it boils down to back pain. The spine is composed of bony pieces, alternating with soft gelatinous cushions called spinal discs. These discs absorb shocks and help to cushion the spine and make it flexible and moveable. As people age, these discs becomes less soft and more vulnerable to damage. Sometimes this deterioration is asymptomatic; in some individuals, disc bulge and press on sensitive nerves and blood vessels in the spine, causing pain and weakness, among other symptoms. This bulging action of the disc is called a disc herniation.

In some people, disc herniation resolves itself. In others, the disc herniation becomes chronic and must be treated for the patient to have a good quality of life.

Conventional medical responses to disc herniation include rest, pain medications, and in more extreme cases, disc surgery, which is sometimes successful and sometimes not. The surgery involves incisions near the spinal cord, and one small mistake in this area can bring disastrous consequences. Some patients, in addition, might not be in a physical condition amenable to surgery in general. There is a better answer for many patients, and that answer is non-surgical spinal decompression for disc herniation.

What exactly is non-surgical spinal decompression? It’s a new treatment for disc herniation that is producing some very good results. In the last few years, some mechanized procedures have been developed in response to the problems presented by simple traction treatments. Traction treatments often involve levels of force that are difficult both for the patient to tolerate, and for the therapist to control. Non-surgical spinal decompression helps to counteract the forces for the patient, by placing them in a supine position instead of an upright position, and provides the chiropractor or therapist with a more precise control of the force being applied to the spine. In this way, traction applied by computerized means becomes a much gentler treatment for disc herniation.

The risks and inconveniences of spinal fusion surgery for herniated discs is so great, that any and all non-surgical options must be considered and tried first before such an option can be reasonably entertained. More people are undergoing disc surgery than ever before, but good results are not growing in correspondence with the amount of surgery being performed. Non-surgical spinal decompression is one other option that can be considered and tried short of surgery for herniated discs. It is noninvasive and effective in many cases. Experimental data performed so far shows that this procedure produces good results with little to no adverse effects on over half of the patients who underwent such a procedure. While further studies need to be done in the future to provide more empirical data, the current results are very promising.

It is worthwhile to begin treatments for disc herniation with other treatments that are currently covered by insurance. If such treatments fail to improve disc herniation in patients, however, it would be well to keep in mind that treatments such as non-surgical spinal decompression do exist, and would be worthwhile to consider short of the extreme measure of spinal surgery.

When you think of lasers, it’s typical to think of Star Wars or other such futuristic movies, but lasers have their use in modern-day conventional and chiropractic medicine. Cold laser therapy, as differentiated from hot lasers, is a noninvasive technique for alleviating pain and stimulating tissue healing in many different kinds of conditions.
While hot lasers are used in cancer treatments to destroy cancerous tissues, cold laser therapy is a lower level of concentrated light that can penetrate the skin to a certain depth and stimulate cells to regenerate and grow. This type of therapy stimulates the cells of the body to generate more adenine triphosphate or ATP, a substance that cells use to bring in oxygen. The increased oxygen level in the cells allows them to work more efficiently at growing and repairing themselves. It is an exciting new development with wide and varied applications. It is even used as a needle-free alternative to acupuncture for patients who want the benefits of acupuncture, but who fear the use of needles.

When undergoing a treatment of cold laser therapy, the patient can expect a series of many short visits to the chiropractor. Each treatment lasts for just a few minutes, while the laser beam is applied strategically to certain spots to alleviate pain and stimulate healing. Either the patient and the chiropractor or therapist may wear goggles to protect their eyes from the intensity of the laser, or they may be directed to look away to protect their eyes. There is seldom any sensation of heat involved, though occasionally patients may report a sensation of hot or coldness during the procedure. Most patients feel no sensitivity or pain during or after the treatment. While some patients experience some immediate relief of symptoms, others may take up to 6-8 visits before any noticeable improvement is made. A treatment plan of cold laser therapy may include anywhere from 12-25 short visits, depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s particular response to the treatment. After having been studied for many years at many different levels, there have yet to be reported any significant side effects from the laser therapy, properly applied.

There are two kinds of cold lasers approved by the FDA at this time. The 3A level laser penetrates a short way into the skin, and is useful when used with cuts or surgical incisions, arthritis, as well as other conditions relatively close to the surface of the skin. The 3B level cold laser goes deeper into tissue, and is useful to treat joint pain, deep muscle wounds, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other deeper conditions. Overall, this treatment is beneficial for many kinds of pain conditions, such as muscle spasms, back pain, shoulder pain, stiffness, and wound healing.

The practice of chiropractic medicine continues to advance with exciting new tools to help improve patient healing and quality of life. Cold laser therapy is one of those tools that a chiropractor can wield in the patient’s behalf to banish pain and accelerate healing of chronic conditions.

Scoliosis is a condition in which the curves of the backbones do not develop normally. A normal backbone will have two gentle S-shaped curves when viewed from the side, but look more or less straight when viewed from the front or the back. If scoliosis develops, the spine develops abnormal curves to the side, and the body does not appear aligned. The head will be off-center, or the ribs or hips will have one side higher than the other.

Mostly, there is no known cause of this condition. It tends to affect women a little more than men, and can begin at any age in life. Other life situations or syndromes may trigger the development of scoliosis in some individuals, such as the existence of a structural problem elsewhere in the body, or a problem in the actual formation of the bones or spine. Among older adults, degenerative diseases such as arthritis can lead to a malformation of the spine. A tumor can put pressure on a person’s spine from time to time, causing the person to compensate for the growth of the tumor and the spine begins to curve abnormally.

The major symptom of scoliosis, no matter the cause, is an abnormal curvature of the spine to the side. Other symptoms may arise from this spinal curvature, such as back pain, especially when involved in activities that require excessive movement from the trunk of the body. Misalignment of the shoulders or hip area, or changes in skin texture and tone over the spinal area could also come into play, or there may be no other obvious symptoms, depending on the severity of the condition.

Once a diagnosis is made, there are many avenues of treatment, depending on the severity of the curvature. If the case is mild, then regular observation is the main treatment. Different medications for pain or physical therapy might be recommended. If the scoliosis is more severe, the need for a back brace or corrective spinal surgery will be considered. These treatments can be effective in some people, and not so effective in others. It’s doubtful that a child with scoliosis will grow to adulthood without some kind of side effect when standard medical treatment alone is utilized.

While chiropractic care cannot cure or sometimes even stop the progression of this condition, chiropractic treatment can still provide great support for the scoliosis patient. Spinal health and development can certain be improved through chiropractic treatment, with fewer side effects and difficulties than spinal surgery presents. Chiropractic treatment presents a more holistic view of the patient, which also presents a greater possibility for management of scoliosis in the future. Treatments such as gentle spinal manipulations, effective exercises for spine support, and lifestyle modification through diet and exercise, will create more of a balance in a patient than constant rounds of pain medication and the dubious results and certain discomfort of spinal surgery. When considering your options for scoliosis treatment, it would be well to consider the ways that chiropractic care could be of benefit to the patient’s total well-being.

The immune systems of the body are the police patrol, keeping outside invaders such as germs or bacteria from overwhelming body systems. They include white blood cells, or leukocytes, that are the front-line soldiers against foreign bodies. These white blood cells are produced in the thymus glands, the spleen, and in the bone marrow. Lymph nodes throughout the body house the produced white blood cells and send them where they need to go. The leukocytes are circulated through both lymphatic vessels and blood vessels, and constantly monitor the body for signs of invasion.

Normally, the immune system is very effective in keeping the body healthy. It does malfunction on occasion, and these over- or under-reactions of the immune system can essentially produce one of three results. When your immune system in a person becomes ineffective, you have an immune-deficiency disease, such as AIDS. When the immune system overreacts to substances that are harmless to the body, you have an allergy to that substance, such as the case with asthma. In people who have had new organs grafted in, the body can reject that organ as a foreign body, and attack it and kill it. In some circumstances, your immune system mistakes the body tissues themselves for foreign invaders, and then your immune system begins to attack the body itself. Diseases such as this, like lupus or MS, are classified as autoimmune diseases. The symptoms of such diseases are incredibly varied, and each group of symptoms will need to be planned for and treated on an individual basis.

When you go to a medical doctor, his treatment for your immune system gone haywire will consist of mostly immunosuppression through drugs. The response of the immune system will be modulated to cause as little damage as possible to body tissues. In the case of immune deficiency, drugs will also be used, but in the opposite direction – to try and stimulate the immune system to be more active. Conventional medicine holds out little to no hope that these drugs will ever be able to be discontinued, and as with any drug, there will often be significant side effects to contend with. With some drugs, there is a potential for overuse or addiction as well, a side effect that will seriously curtail your quality of life.

Chiropractic treatment for your immune system can be much more effective and curative in nature than standard medical drug therapy. Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous systems of the body, and modulating how those messages of the nervous system are sent and received by the brain. Subltle subluxations in the body can cause big problems if left untreated, and that is exactly what chiropractic care can address. Using chiropractic care in conjunction with medical care can help reduce or modulate the side effects than drug therapy. A chiropractic treatment plan will address more than just the patient’s immune system responses, but the whole person, and can sometimes help bring the body’s systems into balance in a way that conventional medicine alone cannot provide. Being treated by a chiropractor is a wise move when dealing with your immune system and the resulting disorders that can occur.

ADHD and ADD are two conditions that affect 3-5% of the children in this country, but can also be symptomatic in adults as well. ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder are typically discussed in connection with one another as they are both very similar in their symptoms and nature. One is characterized by hyperactivity while the other is more focused on the inability to pay attention. While many children may outgrow the symptoms of either ADHD or ADD, still many children take the symptoms into adulthood with them.
The most common symptoms of ADHD and ADD are marked by an inability to concentrate or pay attention to one thing. Other common symptoms in children include: memory problems, does not follow direction, makes mistakes often, loses items, inattention, is fidgety or constantly moving, will not play quietly, talks constantly, interrupts others, and will not wait for his or her turn. In adults, these symptoms are similar but may manifest themselves differently according to the adult lifestyle. Common symptoms of ADHD or ADD in adults are: low self esteem, impulsiveness, inability to properly organize, anger management issues, memory problems, always late, inability to keep a job, procrastination, chronic boredom, often frustrated, concentration problems, violent mood swings, depression, and relationship instability.
While so many children and adults suffer from the symptoms of ADD and ADHD, little is known regarding the exact cause of the conditions. Scientific study has pointed to a variety of causes; however, that seem to have a strong link to the appearance of the condition in both adults and children. The first tie is of a hereditary nature-many people who suffer from the condition have a family history of the presence of ADD and ADHD. Second, many people suffering from these symptoms have reported previous head trauma or injury such as concussions, which have lead to similar symptoms. Third, many scientists link the presence of ADD/ADHD symptoms to chemical imbalances in the brain.
As noted previously, the conditions of ADD and ADHD are always being studied to understand their occurrence more clearly, but unfortunately, little is known in standard medicine to best treat the conditions effectively. This said, many physicians prescribe potent drugs for regular use in children in order to calm the parts of their brains leading to the inattention and restlessness associated with ADD and ADHD. While only mildly effective in treating these symptoms, these drugs are questionable in their health merit, and should certainly not be used regularly in children for the sake of addiction and wearing down of their immune systems.
This is why so many parents and adults are beginning to seek other means of treating their children and themselves, in a manner that is non-harmful and effective. They seek the treatment of chiropractic care. Much success has been found in this discipline in children, as the approach is holistic and comprehensive. While beginning with examinations for possible subluxations that may have contributed to the person’s symptoms, chiropractors also focus on removing foods and environmental items from the child or adult’s life that may be negatively affecting them and leading to their hyperactivity or attention problems. This is done through positive changes in diet, supplementation, exercise, and avoidance of everyday poisons found in the home, work, and school environments.

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time, but unfortunately aside from offering the opportunity for a child, it also offers a variety of uncomfortable symptoms as well. While most every woman will at some point in her life decide to become pregnant, not all will experience the symptoms the same. Pregnancy is characterized by pains and discomforts from mild to severe that are attributable to the hormonal, physical, and weight bearing physical factors that necessarily occur when a woman grows her child. While most all symptoms related to pregnancy are not treatable, the pregnant woman typically no longer experiences them once she gives birth.
What are the common symptoms associated with pregnancy? There are a variety of factors that will determine how mild or severe a woman may experience some of all of the common symptoms involved with the nine month pregnancy. These can be anything from hereditary disposition to the amount of weight gained, and show a direct correlation to the severity of the pains and discomforts women may feel. This said, symptoms of pregnancy can be emotional, physical, and psychological, and here are the most prevalent ones experienced: hormonal mood swings, depression, sciatica pain, back pain, anger, leg pain, swelling in the hands and feet, and there list goes on.
What is the cause of these pains? While the psychological and emotional symptoms can be attributed to the massive hormonal changes happening in a woman’s body as she prepares for birth; the physical discomforts are due to the necessity to carry a baby to term. The average woman gains between 25-40lbs with child, placenta, increase in fluids, etc included during her pregnancy, and this is likely to create a whole host of pains and strains. The pressure extends itself to the pressure on the feet and hands, the back, and legs-naturally-as the body compensates for the extra weight gained quickly.
Standard medicine typically views pregnancy and its discomforts as just what they are-common and untreatable. They consider that a woman must suffer through nine months of these symptoms as a part of the experience. Moreover, medications can be very limited as doctors do not want the drugs to interfere with the child’s growth; so pain must be managed naturally and ineffectively.
This said, more and more pregnant women have decided not to wait it out and try holistic alternatives to doing nothing at all for their aches and pains and emotional discomfort. They have chosen chiropractic treatment to alleviate their pains and soothe their aches. The reason why so much success has been found in this discipline is that a chiropractic treatment begins with subluxations-incidents in which the spine was thrown out of whack, and appropriate manipulations are applied to realign the spine. As pregnancy necessarily brings a lot of weight to the body, it is only natural that the spine would adjust, and cause pains in the legs, back, and elsewhere. As far as the emotional and psychological discomforts, there has also been success with calming these mood swings with improved attention to diet, exercise, and supplementation.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome-sometimes referred to as CFS-affects approximately thousands of people per year-if not hundreds of thousands. The numbers are not quite known as the symptoms can easily mirror a variety of other conditions and situational lifestyle factors. The disease is characterized by an overwhelming loss of energy and the consequent overwhelming feeling of tiredness and fatigue. While many people with lifestyle changes may improve their symptoms within a year or two of contracting the syndrome; still many others carry the condition with them indefinitely for years after.

The most telling symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome is the above referenced feeling that you cannot perform your daily tasks or routine, because you are incapacitated by fatigue, tiredness, and lack of energy. This should not be confused with a period of time in which you are not sleeping enough for whatever situational reason. Instead, physicians use the time table of at least six months of this overwhelming fatigue-without a known reason-to define patients suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. Other common symptoms to join this main one are: problems sleeping, waking up tired, onset of headaches, sore throat, inability to concentrate, memory loss, joint and muscle pain, and sore neck or armpit glands. Moreover, you may experience any of these symptoms in connection with an activity that you used to be able to do, but now exhausts you.

Though there is much speculation regarding the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, as it is a fairly new syndrome to plague patients, very little is known as to its root. Many physicians consider chronic fatigue attributed to lifestyle factors that gradually wear down the immune system, but no studies prove this as the conclusive cause. In many cases, the condition will begin with symptoms of the flu-showing that the immune system is worn down, and it will graduate to perpetual chronic fatigue symptoms.

As the medical world is fairly unfamiliar with the condition, and while still other physicians regard the syndrome as a made up condition, there is no effective cure or treatment to date for chronic fatigue syndrome. One of the main reasons why many doctors in standard medicine reject the legitimacy of the condition is that there are no conclusive tests that a patient can take to point to the syndrome. This said, if you are suffering from these symptoms, you could be told to change your mental perspective from the standard medical world. Unfortunately, these set of symptoms are an actual condition, and it is just being ignored by standard medicine at this point in time.

For these reasons, many patients suffering had looked into alternative treatment to seek relief from chronic fatigue syndrome, such as chiropractic care. Chiropractic treatment can take a closer look at the dysfunctions that may be happening in the body, and heal them through specialized manipulation techniques, massage, as well as diet, exercise, and supplementation. More than likely, the reason for chronic fatigue syndrome has to do with a variety of poor lifestyle choices. By consulting a chiropractor, these issues can be addressed in a manner that is holistic, non-surgical, and comprehensive.

Vertigo and balance disorders affects thousands of people in this country, and are characterized by an inability to perceive balance or motion correctly in relation to the environment in which you are situated. Feelings of vertigo or imbalance can occur once or twice in a lifetime or on a chronic basis, but in either case, the underlying causes should be immediately looked into as it could be signature of something much more serious. While chronic balance disorders refer to an inability for the brain to read signals from your senses, vertigo refers to this same brain miscommunication but in relation to motion. The person experiencing a balance concern could just not feel steady or may feel dizzy, while the person experiencing vertigo would feel like either they or their surroundings were moving when in reality, they were not. We have included these two here together as they have the same nature, symptoms, causes, and treatment.
Symptoms of these conditions-though in contrast according to balance and motion-are very similar and include: hearing loss, sweating, nausea, vomiting, difficulty speaking, sight problems, ringing in the ears, problems walking, weakness, and unusual eye movements. All of these symptoms vary in intensity, occurrence, and amount of time experienced; but any combination of the above symptoms should be investigated as either vertigo and imbalance issues on their own or more potentially serious diseases and conditions.
What causes this feeling of imbalance or vertigo? There are a variety of issues that could be causing the symptoms associated with a particular patient’s vertigo or imbalance. The most prevalent cause is problems with the inner ear. Labyrinthitis is what this is called, and it can easily lead to vertigo or imbalance if not treated, accompanied by hearing loss. Another common cause of these imbalance disorders are the occurrence of some sort of head or brain trauma experienced recently or in the past. This interferes with how the senses and brain communicate, thus producing an effect of imbalance in the body. Moreover, those experiencing vertigo or balance concerns have been linked to chronic migraines. Lastly, if none of these apply to your particular vertigo or balance condition, these symptoms could be evocative of something more serious, such as: Meniere disease, cerebellar hemorrhage, multiple sclerosis, or acoustic neuroma.
What is the cure? While the world of standard medicine has no real cure for vertigo or balance disorders, they try to treat the condition according to what might be causing it. Sometimes this is effective, while other times the vertigo or imbalance comes back after a brief reprieve. Moreover, medication is typically associated with treating vertigo to the same inconclusive effect.
Because there is no conclusive cure for these imbalance disorders, many people decide to try alternative therapies to not just placate their imbalance disorder but to fix it. One of the most popular means of doing so has been through chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors address the imbalance symptoms with spinal alignments and manipulation, diet, supplementation, and exercise combined with new lifestyle changes to avoid the occurrence of these symptoms in the future.

Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS-most commonly known as-affects most all women who are of childbearing age, and carries with it a host of mild to severe symptoms inflicted upon the woman as her body prepares itself to carry a child each month. PMS typically occurs a week or two before a woman’s menstrual period, and is characterized by uncomfortable emotional and physical symptoms. Most women start experiencing these symptoms as soon as they get their first period-early teenage years-but some do not experience noticeable PMS symptoms until their early 20s to 30s. Moreover, with time-and the closer a woman gets to menopause, the symptoms are likely to become more severe and uncomfortable.
What are the common symptoms? Most common of symptoms for women experiencing PMS-though each woman is different and will experience some or all of these each month-are the following: emotional mood swings, cramps, bloating, back aches, fatigue, acne, pelvic aches, and headaches, sore breasts, and cravings for certain types of food. While some have minimal effect on women experiencing them, others can be extremely painful-if not debilitating to the woman involved. Unlike many other conditions persistent in the world, PMS affects a woman not just physically but also emotionally and psychologically-while her hormones are in flux. Common emotional symptoms of woman experiencing psychological and emotional changes are: anger, sadness, inability to concentrate, anxiety, and depression.
What is the cause of PMS? Though it is not known what causes PMS to be more pronounced in some women and less so in others, many physicians and health experts agree that genetics most probably have an important role. So, what causes a woman to experience the condition at all? Premenstrual Syndrome is the result of the hormonal fluctuations that a woman’s body goes through as it prepares to fertilize an egg to make a baby each month. When the egg is not fertilized, the body must hormonally break down the process and start over again.
Common treatments for women struggling with uncomfortable to debilitating PMS symptoms are prescription medications as well as pain relief PMS over the counter drugs. These only help to relieve cramps and pains associated with PMS-as well as cut down on bloating if it applies; but these medications are not necessarily good for a woman’s body on a regular occasion, nor are they always effective.
This said, many women experiencing chronic PMS symptoms have sought holistic, non-medicated care through chiropractic treatments. Chiropractors approach PMS as symptomatic of improper spinal alignment. They know of course, that symptoms will occur in all women every month. That is natural and inevitable; however, they also know that with proper manipulations, supplementation, exercise and diet alterations, and therapeutic massage, that not only can chiropractors cut down on the pains and aches associated with monthly menstruation; but they can also lessen the severity through non invasive therapies. Moreover, chiropractors evaluate women’s diet, vitamin supplementation, exercise, and other lifestyle factors to consider healthful changes that would help minimize the impact of PMS on their bodies.

Chronic high blood pressure is a very common and potentially serious condition that affects millions of Americans each year. High blood pressure-otherwise known as Hypertension-typically has no other symptoms associated with it other than heart associated symptoms; and the only way to see if you have chronic high blood pressure is through a blood pressure test. This can be done at the doctor’s office or a local pharmacy. Though high blood pressure is telling of potentially very serious heart conditions, it can be treated and dramatically lowered if the right approach is taken.
What is the cause of high blood pressure? The specific cause has not been decided conclusively as of yet, though doctors and health experts alike link those with high blood pressure to the following genetic and environmental factors: pregnancy, smoking, family member with high blood pressure, African Americans, women taking birth control, obesity, people over 35, inactive people, people with thyroid disorders, heavy drinkers, people with high fat diets, and people who experience a lot of stress on a regular basis. Many of these factors can be controlled by the person suffering from high blood pressure with only minimal lifestyle modification, but this will not eliminate the predisposition to high blood pressure.
What is considered high blood pressure? Your doctor will of course tell you what is normal and if yours is out of range, but for the record, high blood pressure is basically anything above 120 for the top number and 80 for the bottom number in the readout of your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is above 120 by only a bit, it is not cause for alarm as there are two ways to classify high blood pressure, each one progressively symptomatic of conditions more serious. The first phase is between 120 and 139 and 80 and 89. The second stage is 160 plus and 100 plus.
High blood pressure, though in many cases treatable, is a telling symptom of how your heart is functioning. Though many people with high blood pressure ignore the numbers and just think they need to less stressed, for the most part, high blood pressure means that their heart is working overtime all the time, and this is not good for the life of the heart. After all, we depend on our hearts to pump blood to all parts of our body to keep us alive. The rate at which you heart is working as it is pumped through your blood vessels is the number you receive when you get your blood pressure checked. Hypertension or high blood pressure is indicative of a heart that is unable to pump blood efficiently to all parts of your body. Dysfunction of your heart can lead to a host of heart problems, such as heart attacks, stroke, heart failure, atheroschlerosis, or death.
Just because a person’s high blood pressure is observed, does not in the least give them a cure for the condition. Standard medicine offers blood pressure pills and sometimes heart surgeries to try to combat the effects of an overworked heart, but these measures are all bandaid solutions for something more serious at work in the body. People, instead, have been turning to chiropractic treatments to help them combat their high blood pressure. This is done-and with positive results-through chiropractic alignments of vertebrae, manipulations, therapeutic massage, and other lifestyle changes.
