Manage PMS Symptoms with Chiropractic
Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS-most commonly known as-affects most all women who are of childbearing age, and carries with it a host of mild to severe symptoms inflicted upon the woman as her body prepares itself to carry a child each month. PMS typically occurs a week or two before a woman’s menstrual period, and is characterized by uncomfortable emotional and physical symptoms. Most women start experiencing these symptoms as soon as they get their first period-early teenage years-but some do not experience noticeable PMS symptoms until their early 20s to 30s. Moreover, with time-and the closer a woman gets to menopause, the symptoms are likely to become more severe and uncomfortable.
What are the common symptoms? Most common of symptoms for women experiencing PMS-though each woman is different and will experience some or all of these each month-are the following: emotional mood swings, cramps, bloating, back aches, fatigue, acne, pelvic aches, and headaches, sore breasts, and cravings for certain types of food. While some have minimal effect on women experiencing them, others can be extremely painful-if not debilitating to the woman involved. Unlike many other conditions persistent in the world, PMS affects a woman not just physically but also emotionally and psychologically-while her hormones are in flux. Common emotional symptoms of woman experiencing psychological and emotional changes are: anger, sadness, inability to concentrate, anxiety, and depression.
What is the cause of PMS? Though it is not known what causes PMS to be more pronounced in some women and less so in others, many physicians and health experts agree that genetics most probably have an important role. So, what causes a woman to experience the condition at all? Premenstrual Syndrome is the result of the hormonal fluctuations that a woman’s body goes through as it prepares to fertilize an egg to make a baby each month. When the egg is not fertilized, the body must hormonally break down the process and start over again.
Common treatments for women struggling with uncomfortable to debilitating PMS symptoms are prescription medications as well as pain relief PMS over the counter drugs. These only help to relieve cramps and pains associated with PMS-as well as cut down on bloating if it applies; but these medications are not necessarily good for a woman’s body on a regular occasion, nor are they always effective.
This said, many women experiencing chronic PMS symptoms have sought holistic, non-medicated care through chiropractic treatments. Chiropractors approach PMS as symptomatic of improper spinal alignment. They know of course, that symptoms will occur in all women every month. That is natural and inevitable; however, they also know that with proper manipulations, supplementation, exercise and diet alterations, and therapeutic massage, that not only can chiropractors cut down on the pains and aches associated with monthly menstruation; but they can also lessen the severity through non invasive therapies. Moreover, chiropractors evaluate women’s diet, vitamin supplementation, exercise, and other lifestyle factors to consider healthful changes that would help minimize the impact of PMS on their bodies.
